Stress Check Process
Who Are the Target Employees?
The mandatory stress check applies to employees who are regularly employed at the workplace.
This includes part-time and temporary workers whose employment term exceeds one year and whose working hours are at least three-quarters of the standard working hours.
Companies with 50 or more employees are required to conduct stress checks.
Companies with fewer than 50 employees are currently only encouraged (not required) to conduct stress checks, but mandatory implementation is expected in the future.
There are no legal penalties for not conducting stress checks, but if an employee files a complaint related to overwork or harassment, the company may be placed in a highly disadvantageous position.
What is the WELL Assessment?
The WELL Assessment we offer is a uniquely developed stress check by Wellful Japan, based on the "Brief Job Stress Questionnaire" created by a research group under the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
The "Brief Job Stress Questionnaire" is the most widely used stress check tool in Japan.
The WELL Assessment enhances this tool with additional improvements.
It fully complies with all legal requirements for stress checks that became mandatory as of December 1, 2015.
This stress check was developed by a nationwide team of licensed labor and social security attorneys (sharoushi) with expertise in labor laws and HR practices.
It has been carefully designed to align with both legal and practical HR requirements and has been adopted by listed companies with high satisfaction.
- ※Individuals with high stress levels are identified based on 9 key stress-related items. A physician will assess the need for an interview and provide a signed and stamped judgment.
- ※A paid consultation service is available for employees.
- ※Clear and personalized comments are provided for each individual result.
Three Ways to Utilize the WELL Assessment
Early Intervention for "Ultra" High-Stress Individuals
"Ultra" high-risk individuals exceed threshold levels in all three stress-related dimensions: fatigue, anxiety, and depression (consolidated from 9 key subitems). They are at extremely high risk for mental health issues and may take leave, resign, or exhibit problematic behavior at any time.
We further identify "ultra" high-stress individuals among the high-stress group and provide early intervention and tailored support from an HR management perspective.
Monitor the Number of High-Stress Employees and Work to Reduce It High-stress individuals are considered highly likely to suffer from mental health issues.
We digitally track and analyze the status and causes of high-stress cases, supporting organizational efforts to reduce their numbers and improve mental well-being through a PDCA cycle.

Understand and Improve Health Risk Scores
Work-related stress among employees can be assessed and quantified as a health risk score.
We support specific initiatives for improving the work environment, taking into account individual circumstances.
We understand that, as a company with 50 or more employees, we are required to conduct a stress check. But how exactly should we proceed?
